FAQs
What is micro-CHP?
A micro-combined heat and power [m-CHP] system simultaneously produces heat and power [cogeneration] for a residence or small business facility. The m-CHP system is located on the property, typically in the basement, underneath the sink, or around the exterior of the house or business. It should simply be viewed as another household appliance - such as a washing machine.
How efficient is the Disenco micro-CHP system?
Based on Stirling engine technology, it is considered one of the most fuel-efficient engines in the world, operating at greater than 90% efficiency.
Does it install like a regular boiler?
Yes. The Disenco HomePowerPlant has been designed to be simple to install in a similar way to a conventional boiler and the cost and time of installation should be reasonably the same by CORGI registered installer. Servicing is expected to be annual as per current best practise in the boiler industry.
What is the cost of the home power plant:
Based on volume production projections, the cost of an m-CHP unit is expected to be competitive with a conventional boiler when its ability to generate significant levels of electricity is taken into account..
Is it connected to the electrical and heating systems in the house?
Yes. The m-CHP unit connects easily and readily to your existing electrical system, heating system and hot water system in your home.
Will this require the electricity meter to change?
Yes. A new and simple two way meter will be installed to measure both the import and export of electricity to and from the utility power grid.
Will my home receive its electricity first before electricity is exported to the grid?
Yes. Your home will regulate the production of electricity and your home will always be taken care of first.
How long will this home power plant run for?
The m-CHP unit should typically run for as long as a conventional boiler, which on average, is about 15 years. During this period the m-CHP until will be a reliable source of power and heat.
Will anything be paid for the export of electricity to the power grid?
The UK and many European countries recognize the necessity to reward the production of electricity to the power grid and countries are moving rapidly to implement government policies to pay for this electricity. As of June 2006 payment for electicity by utilities is mandatory in the UK and the UK government has implemented numerous grants and subsidy schemes.
When will Disenco’s m-CHP unit be ready for purchase?
The first commercialized HomePowerPlants are scheduled to be available in the Q2 2009.
